Origin of the Mughal Gardens
Mughal Gardens in kashmir is developed during the time of mughal emperors and particularly under Emperor Jahangir and his wife, Empress Nur Jahan. Inspired by the Persian garden architecture. The idea was to create the paradise on earth, with flowing water, manicured lawns, and blooming flowers surrounded by the majestic backdrop of the Himalayas.
The primary Mughal Gardens in Kashmir are Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. Each of these gardens has unique charm making it a must visit for history buffs, nature lovers.
1.Garden of Love : Shalimar Garden
Shalimar bagh is built by the mughal emperor Jahangir in 1619, and it is the most famous mughal gardens in Kashmir. This garden is built for his beloved wife, Nur Jahan and named as “Garden of Love”. It is laid out in persian style in the area of 31 acres. The main attraction in the garden is central pavilion called as “Black Pavilion“. The water canals and play of fountains enhance the beauty of this garden.
Best time to visit
Visit during the summers from month April to June when the flowers are in full bloom, or in october month to witness the striking autumn colors.
Garden of Joy : Nishat Bagh
Nishat bagh was built by the Asif Khan, brother of Nur Jahan, in 1633. The garden is known as “Garden of Joy” because of its expansive lawns and stunning views of the Zabarwan mountain range. Nishat bagh is the second largest mughal gardens in the Kashmir and is designed with twelve terraces, each representing a sign of the zodiac. Fountains, garden’s rows of vibrant flowers, including roses, tulips, and lilies makes the atmosphere more soothing and enhance the beauty of this garden.

3.Chashme Shahi
Chashme Shahi was laid out by the mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632. This is the smallest mughal garden in Kashmir and famous for its natural spring that is believed to have medicinal properties. The garden is built on three terraces with a central water channel that flows down to Dal Lake.

Spring and early summer are the best times to enjoy the garden’s fresh blossoms.
