Khardung la pass is nestled in the Leh-Ladakh region of India and it is one of the most famous mountain passes in the world. Located at altitude of 5,359 meters (17,582 feet) above sea level. It is renowned as the highest motorable road in the world which makes it a dream destination for adventure seekers, bikers and travelers.

How to reach Khardung la pass ?

 

1.By Air

The nearest airport to Khardung La is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, which is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar.

Hire a taxi or rent a bike in Leh to travel the 40 km to Khardung La.

2.By Road

Leh is the base for all road journeys to Khardung La. To reach Leh, you have two options:

A. From Manali

  • Distance: Approximately 475 km to Leh

  • Route: Manali -> Rohtang Pass -> Jispa -> Sarchu -> Leh

  • Manali-Leh Highway is scenic beautiful but more challenging, usually open from June to September.

B. From Srinagar

  • Distance: Approximately 420 km to Leh

  • Route: Srinagar -> Sonamarg -> Drass -> Kargil -> Leh

  • Srinagar-Leh Highway is another route and is typically open from May to November.

Once you reach Leh, Khardung La pass is just a 40 km drive away.

3. By Bike

You can Rent a bike from Leh for the journey.

4. By Bus

  • Regular JKSRTC buses and private buses operate from Manali and Srinagar to Leh.

  • After reaching Leh, taxis or shared cabs are available to Khardung La pass. However, buses directly to Khardung La are limited.

Best time to Visit

May and October when weather is stable and the roads are more accessible is the best time to visit Khardungla pass. The pass is closed during the winter season and in monsoon season it is dangerous to go because of landslides and road damage.

Preparation tips

Acclimatize- It is very important to acclimatize for atleast 3-4 days before heading to Khardung La to avoid altitude sickness.

Carry warm clothes- Layered clothing is essential because in summers temperature may drop at freezing level on the top.

Drink water- It is recommended to you that you should drink lot of water during the trip. Drink more water then your daily routine to avoid dehydration.

Bring Snacks and Water- The journey is long, and while there are some road side stalls, carring your own food and water is recommended.
